This kind of thing continually reinforces something I’ve thought about a lot since the App store was released, which sounds horrible to say but it might be true: Apple is creating an ecosystem of the kind of customers I don’t want. With the ridiculous approval process leaving bugfixes to take over a week to show up, with prices being driven down to nothing by farting apps… it just feels hostile to me. While I have plenty of great customers who have been raving about the app, all it takes is one little issue and it all comes crashing down.

A nice article that exposes some real flaws in the Apple iTunes App Store. We should be encouraging developers like Garrett to continue creating awesome applications, not discouraging them with a convoluted process.

Of all the key features on the iphone, the ipod functionality is what I use the most. It really has been great to carry my phone around and get the added bonus of it also being my music player. Now that I am driving to work again, I have been using that functionality a lot. A day doesn’t pass that I don’t que up a podcast or listen to some music (generally on shuffle) during my daily drive.

Shuffle is a great way to get reacquainted with bands that go unplayed for a while. It is amazing what forgotten gems it can find. What use to be an easy task of taking the ipod off of shuffle and having it just play an album straight through instead becomes a difficult one while driving. Currently it is a multi-step process to make this happen and something I don’t find myself doing a lot. What I would like to see is a button that turns off shuffle and takes you to album mode of that song that you were just listening to. I envision the button towards the bottom right of the album artwork and would only show up when in shuffle mode. Something that is easy to select while at the same time keeping your eyes on the road.

So Mr Jobs, what do you say, a little more functionality to keep us commuters safe?

If you had asked me three years ago what I would be doing now, I would have been completely wrong. Probably a reason I don’t play the lottery or do very well in Vegas. I would have guessed that I’d work for a company that landed a contract for some three-letter government organization (with Level 3 Consultant after my name). I would have been completely wrong.

Two things really changed the direction of my forecast: a book by Jeffrey Zeldman and an ad on Craig’s list. Perusing Craig’s list a couple years ago I stumbled upon a front-end developer position at Revolution Health. An e-mail, an interview, and two days later I was putting in my two weeks’ notice and officially starting my career. The initial feeling was very interesting: a large, open area full of like-minded individuals, all amazingly smart and incredibly fun to work with. The passion was contagious. It started a domino effect for me. I had to learn everything I could, read every blog post, listen to every podcast, go to conferences and take part in the technology scene in the DC area.

Fast forward 2 years…

On Monday I will take a slightly different route to work. Instead of walking it will require a car (and probably a lot of other cars for that matter). Revolution won’t be the final destination anymore but it will always be my starting point. It was a great ride and I will always be thankful for the opportunity they gave me. I believe in the cause and know in my absence they will be fighting the good fight to empower consumers and play a role in fixing the health care system.

Monday, June 2, will be my first day joining the amazingly awesome team at Mixx. After working with Jason on politweets and twittertale I jumped at the chance to share office space and feed off his awesomeness (putting him up for next year’s international day of awesomeness king). However, after stepping into the office and meeting the others, I know the awesomeness doesn’t stop with Jason. I am really excited to join the team and already have some ideas (you know me: can’t stop the ideas, can only hope to contain them).

So thus starts chapter two. The funny part is, I still have no idea what the next three years will bring. But this time, I like that feeling.

Just happened to be coming to town October 26th to the 28th, but alas that was one of my best friends weddings and I was in it. I was really bummed that I couldn’t make it, and by the sound of things it went over really well. I returned from the wedding

in the afternoon on the 28th and decided to have my own little start-up weekend (well my weekend allotted for 8 hours). I have always been interested in quotes my whole life and even though there are probably a million sites out there devoted to them, I wanted to do it my way. What I came up with is reciteable. The design is bare bones and broken (page view is totally hosed will fix tonight), the content is lacking but sign up for the rss feed and enjoy.

I am sure that most of you have seen the ads already, however if you haven’t I wanted to post a link. As usual Apple goes above and beyond expectations and makes (what I will call) “tutorial based marketing” that not only shows off the beauty/power of the technology but also gives the viewer a quick “how-to” in regards to using it.

Think about all the products that are pushed before your eyes in some form of advertising each day. Not many companies can accomplish so much in such a small period of time. I will also pass on some credit to the Ad Agency behind the ads. I am sure it is a shared vision that sets them above the rest

Last night I attended the first TECH Cocktail DC . If you are not familiar with TECH cocktail it started in Chicago and is now trying for global dominance, and they might just achieve it. I didn’t have a chance to meet any of the people behind the concept but can only thank them for putting on a great event. This area needs more “mixers” like the one last night.

There were more than 250 people in attendance, some of them can be seen on Flickr here and here.

I met a lot of interesting, smart people who all have the same common passion, technology. There were also some companies in attendance demoing their goods and services.

Animal Attraction – an online dating site that aims to connect pet lovers

BuzzXYZ powered by Blogdigger – helps track the buzz online

Clearspring – services for building, deploying and tracking widgets

Sportsvite – online community is bringing sports lovers together for on-the-field fun

PatentMonkey – fully search-able US patent text database

Wine Library TV – showcased their wine site & were recruiting more “Vayniacs”

Many companies were represented. Too many to name in fact. I will say that it was also great to put some faces behind those companies I have heard/read so much about. Viget labs is a small web consulting firm out of Falls Church. They are probably most known for their work with Britney Spears and Other Music/Enteraintment types. In a prior life I was a recruiter and constantly on the hunt for something they called “web standards people”??? Well how the times have changed, we know share the same passion and try each day to spread the word about semantic markup and web standards. People please don’t hurt the web!!!

There was another event last night that I had to miss unfortunately. Refresh DC took place last night and sounds like it was another home run. If you haven’t been to the monthly meetings, it is a great place to meet some of the smartest people in DC.

Well I am off to @media next week in San Francisco. If you just happen to be one of my 5 loyal readers and are also attending don’t be shy.

Today’s events at Virginia Tech University were awful and something you never want to see. Right away I began thinking about how this could have been prevented and how better we could prepare so there would never be a “next time”. After listening to the President of the school, officers and students talk of the days happenings it has become very apparent that a serious lack of communication took place. Two hours and 20 minutes elapsed from the first shooting to the second shooting. An underlying theme from the students has been “not knowing of the first shooting” or “we heard loud banging, thought it was construction”. In this day and age of always being connected while at the same time dealing with a demographic that has all the latest technology and understands how to use it, there is no excuse for these quotes. I believe a technology like Twitter could have played a key part in providing that much needed communication.

Twitter

A global community of friends and strangers answering one simple question: What are you doing? Answer on your phone, IM, or right here on the web!

There are many many blog posts out there that talk about how Twitter is just a fad, and only used by a select few. In today’s scenario nothing could have worked better, “answers on your phone, Im or right on the web”. The officials talk about how big the campus is, how most of the students commute, and how some were in route to class. A simple message posted to a system like Twitter could have touched all of those instances and perhaps saved some lives.
